If you need to purchase an individual ticket(s) for this convention, please send a check made out to SWEIO to Ann Perry, 618 Sunset Drive, Janesville, Wisconsin 53548. Please provide proper return address information for the ticket(s) to be sent to you. The cost for each ticket is $20.00. Checks must be received by February 15th to allow for on-time delivery. Patti Phillipps: Special Education Through the Back Door

Patti Philips is Director of Pupil Services for the Baldwin-Woodville Area School District. She has had a passion for education for 34 years.

This session is for special education teachers and teachers who have secretly wanted to become a special education teacher.  In the field of special education we love our acronyms and enjoy being “different.”  It’s not about being “different” it is about good teaching and what’s best for kids.  Rather than giving an initiative or teaching model an acronym, do what works for students in your classroom, even through the back door.  This session will discuss and give teachers an opportunity to network about the latest initiatives, activities, and ideas without giving it a label.


Kristin K. C. Kundry: English Language Learners’ Snapshot

Kristen K.C. Gundry is the District Resource teacher for the English Language Learner (ELL) program in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  She has 15 years of ELL teaching/programming experience in rural and urban districts

Michael Belongie: Restored Prairie at Holy Wisdom Monastery

Michael Belongie, a past president of SWEIO, remains ardent about the environment and has been actively involved with the care of 100 acres of restored prairie land at Holy Wisdom Monastery in Middleton, Wisconsin.

As a poet and volunteer, Michael will share with participants the exciting resources of this 100-acre tract that includes a glacial lake. Your students have a viable ecosystem that may be visited and appreciated from both a science and historical perspective. The Ho-Chunk clans revered this overlook of Lake Mendota. From an energy conservation perspective you and your students have the opportunity to tour the highest-rated L.E.E.D. certified building in the United States. John Fisher: My PDP – Resources and Support

Stop into this session for a 20 minute look at all the resources and materials, many online and digital, available to help you as you develop your Professional Development Plan.  The remaining time will be used to provide one on one support and Q&A for anyone  working on writing a PDP. John Fischer taught ELL and Language Arts in northern Wisconsin before working as a K-12 Program Manager for the University of Wisconsin-Extension’s Division of Continuing Education, Outreach, & E-Learning in 2001.  Currently John is the Executive  Director of the Wisconsin Education Association Professional Development Academy, Inc. and serves as the Director for the Quality Educator Interactive project (www.myqei.org).

We the People: Civic Education Programs for Grades 4-12

This is a two-for-one session. First participants learn about the elementary, middle and high school textbooks and supporting resources available from the Center for Civic Education and how their congressional district coordinator can assist them in the classroom. They also examine textbook lessons and documents that align each lesson with the Wisconsin Social Studies Standards. Participants receive information about free resources from the Sate Bar of Wisconsin and how to request a free set of 30 textbooks with a teacher’s edition. You can save your school district thousands of dollars with these free materials.

We the People Project Citizen is a curricular program for middle and secondary students. The Project focuses on the role that state and local government plays in the US federal system. Project Citizen promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. In the process, students develop support for democratic values and principles. Students identify a public policy problem and do research. They develop their own solution in the form of a public policy, and create a political action plan to enlist local or state authorities to adopt their proposed policy.


Billie Earl Sparks: Mathematics Education: Where Are We? How Did We Get This Way? And Where Are We Going?

Reaching the goal of a standards based curriculum of developing mathematical power for all students requires that student learning has to go beyond the learning of specific concepts and skills. The goals must include flexibility of thought in exploring mathematical ideas, perseverance in working on mathematical tasks, and a constant focus on understanding and sense-making. This approach should be seamless through all of PK-12 mathematics. This session will address the new Common Core State Standards, how students best learn mathematics, and what structures we need to realize a curriculum of high expectations for all students in mathematics. Dr. Sparks is Co-Project Director of the Wisconsin Academy Staff Development Initiative (WASDI). He has over forty years of experience teaching mathematics at all levels and is a frequent consultant to schools and educational agencies throughout the United States on curriculum, instruction, and assessment in mathematics.
  


Billie Earle Sparks: Mathematics for Understanding and Procedural Fluency

Two critical elements for developing deep conceptual understanding of mathematics along with procedural fluency are the tasks that we ask students to engage with and the classroom discourse. This session will involve the participants in tasks appropriate for their students as they also learn tools for keeping the demand of the task high and targeted and for orchestrating the discourse in classroom. The new Common Core State Standards for Mathematics emphasize understanding and this session will emphasize communication, connections, and reflection as processes to deepen understanding of mathematics concepts. Dr. Sparks is Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus and has conducted over 700 inservices, workshops, or seminars for teachers, been project director or co-director on many mathematics education grants from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and other agencies

Maureen Look-Ainsworth: Teaching 21st Century Skills through Crime Scene Investigation

Maureen Look-Ainsworth, Wisconsin’s 2011 Teacher of the Year, Horning Middle School, Waukesha

This hands-on workshop will give you ideas to start developing your own crime scenes with forensics science background knowledge. You will be able to bring back a unit that you can utilize right away in your classroom. Maureen teaches how to get your colleagues involved in your crime scene unit and develop and collaborate with community organizations.  Throughout the development of forensic science, 21st century skills are taught using various topics of science. Teachers attending this workshop will be in a drawing for door prizes and crime scene materials. Look-Ainsworth was a NASA educator teaching at five Wisconsin Academies.  She is a Project Lead The Way engineering teacher through Milwaukee School of Engineering and has two master’s degrees in education.

Vaughn Vance: The Future of Health Care

Major changes are coming to the delivery of health care in the United States and especially to Wisconsin. This session will help you understand the reasons for those changes, who's driving them, and suggest how you and your family can affect them and prepare for them. .  Prior to joining WEA Trust in 2004, Vaughn served at the state and federal level working primarily on health care reform and insurance regulatory issues.  He earned his law degree with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as well as his Master's of Public Administration from the Robert M. LaFollette School of Public Affairs. 

Gerhard Fischer: Going Global – Why Learning about the World is Good for Everyone

Don’t we owe our students an education that prepares them for the kinds of decisions they will have to make in a globally connected world?  This session will engage participants in a discussion of the need for international education for all students, and it will demonstrate the rich personal rewards for teachers involved in international partnerships.
Gerhard taught English and German in the German school system for eleven years and has served as consultant for English Language Arts and Curriculum Development at DPI. His dedication to international education stems from many personal experiences, including studies in Germany, England, and the US. Gerhard earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction at UW-Madison.

Jodee Blanco: It's NOT Just Joking Around!  Understanding School Bullying Through the Eyes of a Former Victim

Jodee Blanco, Survivor, expert and activist, author of The New York Times bestseller, Please Stop Laughing At Me . . . One Woman’s Inspirational Story.

Jodee Blanco will bring your audience inside the heart and mind of the bullied child, and see the world through their compelling point of view.  She will relive painful episodes from her past so that your audience may witness firsthand what she endured at the hands of her peers and what millions of other kids today are also going through for the very same reason—simply for being different.  Jodee’s primary message throughout this dramatic and moving talk is threefold: bullying is not just joking around, it damages you for life; bullying just isn’t the mean things you do, it’s all the nice things you never do; and if you’re being bullied or shunned, there’s nothing wrong with you, it’s everything that’s right about you that makes you a target, and you shouldn’t change for anyone, it is those who put you down who need to change.  Jodee will conclude Part I with a powerful empathy exercise that allows the audience to experience on a deeply personal and visceral level exactly what the bullied child feels.

Jodee Blanco: How to Help a Bullied Child...and the Bully: Specific Strategies from a Survivor Turned Activist

Jodee Blanco, Survivor, expert and activist, author of The New York Times bestseller, Please Stop Laughing At Me . . . One Woman’s Inspirational Story.

This is the workshop portion of her presentation. She will begin Part II with a brief description of some of her most unforgettable experiences working deep inside the trenches of America's schools, then segue into advice for students, teachers, parents, and Adult Survivors of Peer Abuse like herself, who have come to trust her as the champion of their cause.  Highlights include: what you should never say to a bullied child and why; what you should say and do; how the bully and the victim are flipsides of the same coin and how to identify and assist both; the two types of bullying and why one is innocuous and the other dangerous; the two types of popular students; the typical profile of the bullied child; how to intervene with a bullied child one-on-one; how to intervene with a group; why traditional punishment doesn’t always work and how to supplement it with an innovative alternative called Compassionate Discipline; how to deal with the parents of bullies and/or victims; how to spot the warning signs a victim may be suicidal  or contemplating retaliation; where to turn for support; and other vital information.
She will also reveal deeply personal insights such as: the worst mistakes the adults in her life made and what she wishes they would have done different; the most common complaints she hears from bullied students today, and what they want their teachers and parents to know but don’t have the courage to tell them.  At the end of this two-hour presentation, she will answer questions, and then do a book-signing with both her books available.   Jodee’s entire focus from start to finish will be to touch hearts, open minds, and most importantly, give hope.

John Lynn: George Rogers Clark Takes the Old Northwest

John Lynn, Peoria, Illinois, paddler, pedaler, plodder

Canoe 1000 miles down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and then bicycle 320 miles through southern Illinois in the path of the daring George Rogers Clark when he and his men captured the British forts at Kaskaskia, Illinois and Vincennes, Indiana during the American Revolution. Armed with a degree in history from the University of Illinois, a special rapport with dogs and raccoons, and a taste for grilled cheese sandwiches – John Lynn has personally hiked, bicycled, or canoed nearly 30,000 miles of historic and scenic trails, roads, and rivers in North America and the British Isles.  His colorful digital slide presentations that describe his experiences have now gotten him into over 3600 lecture halls, classrooms, and other such places where he might not have otherwise been invited.

Jane McMahon: Books, Blogs and Brouhaha

Technology and Young Adult Literature form the backbone of this new elective class at Jack Young Middle School in Baraboo, Wisconsin.  As the students examine different literary genres, they learn new technologies to showcase their learning.  So far students have created blogs, podcasts, and graphic novel pages using Comic Life Magiq software.  Soon they will be creating commercial parodies using iMovie and booktalking with use of VoiceThread.  Stop in to learn about and share exciting new ways to promote literacy and share the love of literature with a broader school community.  Jane McMahon has taught middle school in Baraboo, Wisconsin for over 20 years, and she has hosted book clubs with students long before Oprah made them cool.  She is NOT an expert in technology.

Steve Paulson: Science vs. Religion:  What's Really at Stake in this Debate?

We need to go beyond the hot-button issues that tend to grab headlines—like stem cell research or creationism—and explore the murkier, more confusing questions about our place in the universe.
That quote from Steve Paulson’s book, Atoms and Eden: Conversations on Religion and Science, reflects his desire to get to the heart of important issues. As producer and host of Wisconsin Public Radio’s nationally syndicated program, To the Best of Our Knowledge, Paulson has interviewed some of the best thinkers around, including Richard Dawkins and Jane Goodall.


Kurt Sampson: Wisconsin Prehistory and Effigy Mounds

This session is about Wisconsin Native American prehistory and effigy mounds.
It will provide teachers with a basic overview and understanding of the different prehistoric Native American traditions in Wisconsin, and give them some helpful guidelines for incorporating this information into any elementary or middle school curriculum.   Kurt Sampson is President Elect of the Wisconsin Archeological Society and President of the Friends of Aztalan State Park Foundation.


Sandy Drew: Benefiting from the State of Wisconsin Investment Board

Sandy Drew will provide an overview of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) and how individual members benefit from it, how the assets are managed and how employees and retirees are affected by investment returns.  After unprecedented declines in 2008, the WRS has recovered most, but not all, of the losses.  Sandy will discuss steps being taken to protect the funds in future down financial markets. She will be happy to answer questions you may have about SWIB and pension benefits.
